The world’s off its rocker. I’ve spent my career working with the media, trying to help make some sense of it.
Background
I’ve worked across NGOs, the UN, and the Red Cross/Red Crescent, alongside some exceptional people in demanding environments.
That’s taken me from conflict zones to natural disasters, sometimes in situations that were unpredictable, high-risk, and occasionally surreal. I’ve made mistakes along the way and learned most of what I know by doing.
Experience
I’ve led teams and handled communications in high-pressure situations where clarity mattered.
My work has covered hostage situations, bomb blasts, earthquakes, tsunamis, COVID-19, and reports on genocide and crimes against humanity. It’s meant making decisions quickly, staying calm under pressure, and helping others do the same.
I was awarded Australia’s Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal.
Along the way
I’ve met and worked alongside journalists I admire, including Lyse Doucet, James Nachtwey, Alex Thomson, John Simpson and Jon Snow.
I also once found myself in an unexpectedly long conversation with Tom Cruise in Canada. Less professionally useful, but memorable.
Now
The power base is shifting, and so is my focus.
I now work in grassroots activism with River Action UK, using media to expose pollution, challenge power, and turn public concern into action.
That means working with campaigners, lawyers, and public figures to shape stories that can drive change. Recent collaborations include Chris Packham, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, and Robert Macfarlane.
Off Duty
Usually in a proper pub, at a gig, enjoying vegetarian food, walking my greyhound, or wandering through woods beside fast-flowing rivers.
Still trying to use my skills for good.
